communication

I figure that because most people who look at my blog are the ones that really know me and most of you have known me for my whole life, so I am going to pose a question. In my social work Practice 1 class (individual), we have begun talking about communication - verbal and nonverbal. My question(s): as you have all communicated with me, what have you noticed about me when I speak? What are my gestures when I speak? What is my pitch and tone when I speak? How is my delivery of speech? When I am listening to you speak, how are my listening skills? What do I do when I listen to you speak? I am interested in knowing what you think of my own personal communication skills...

What are my gestures when I speak?
I think you have a very sending personality - your hands are moving - your eyes are following - your eyebrows are up (however, this may just be the jensen gene!)and I feel like you imitate what you observe - like if my head tilts, you may tilt yours along with me, etc.

What is my pitch and tone when I speak?
This depends entirely on the message of course! You have a low voice, but it goes up and down a bunch with your excitement! Definitely no monotone in your voice.

How is my delivery of speech? Not sure what this means.......

When I am listening to you speak, how are my listening skills?

Yes I think you do. You have always been a very concerned and compassionate listener.

What do I do when I listen to you speak?
You say back what you are hearing me say. You watch me. I think you try to tune into the mood - unless of course, you don't really want to hear the message - which usually is something like 'Alli, how's that car repair coming along?' tehe............

I think overall that you have picked the perfect profession - you are compassionate, a good listener, you communicate well, you share your opinions but are willing to listen to mine as well - even when they differ. I can see you always weighing in on those opinions!

Hope this helps............loves..........

I just looked back at the one question 'how is my delivery of speech'..........you speak clearly, are easy to understand, and are very detail oriented!

And by the way, how is that car repair coming along?

I agree with all that your mom said!

You are definitely very animated when you speak. You use a lot of facial features and hand gestures.

Your pitch goes up the more excited you get, and fluctuates with what you are talking about. Your volume also changes with the topic of speech.

You speak clearly and slow enough so that you are understandable, but not too slow.

You give a lot of verbal feedback when listening. A lot of "mmhmms" and "yeahs" to show that you are listening. You also make good eye contact when listening.

Hope that helps! Love you!

- What are my gestures when I speak?
Like everyone has said, you use your hands a lot! Especially if you are excited about what you are talking about. I agree that your eyes follow, and are very animated as well.

- What is my pitch and tone when I speak?
You are lucky to have a nice low voice like me :) but it does fluctuate a lot, again, depending on your excitement level. When you aren't excited, I still think that you use good tones, and inflect your voice as it's appropriate.

- How is my delivery of speech?
You are great at telling stories and including lots of details. You remember a lot, and also remember to speak clearly - no matter how excited you may be! You also have a few 'catch phrases/words' that you use often.

- When I am listening to you speak, how are my listening skills? What do I do when I listen to you speak?
You acknowledge what I am saying - you do this verbally by repeating what I'm saying, or like Dani said, using mhmmms, yeahs, etc. You use eye contact (when we're not on the phone!) and are good at repeating back what I've said to make sure you understand (this is a great teacher move by the way!) I think you're very sensitive to what I'm feeling when I'm sharing something with you, and you share in that emotion with me. You're very compassionate in that way.

Hope that helps Al! Sorry it took me so long to respond! And sorry a lot of it is pretty much what everyone else has already said. I just agree!

Love you!
